In an effort to promote talented academics, and with the generous support of the Government of the United Arab Emirates, IRENA is awarding up to 20 scholarships at Abu Dhabi based MASDAR Institute of Science and Technology. The Programme extends to the eight Master of Science Programmes offered at MASDAR Institute.

All IRENA scholars are entitled to generous benefits and are offered IRENA’s exclusive Lecture Programme, which will provide IRENA’s scholars with an overview of the current state of renewable energies.

Applicants for IRENA’s Scholarship Programme, will be admitted in accordance to the academic standards and regulations of Masdar Institute. Out of those who passed, IRENA will select the winning candidates in accordance with additional criteria that can be found on the following pages or on IRENA’s website.

IRENA MSc Scholars are required to join a renewable energy related research project for the duration of their scholarships. When taking up study, during orientation week, MASDAR Institute will inform all new students about the current research projects. Out of these projects IRENA scholars shall select a renewable energy related topic. Moreover, the final thesis shall be written on a renewable energy related topic as well.

While IRENA scholars will benefit from the additional services offered by IRENA, they still must adhere to MASDAR Institute’s policies and procedures, as set out in the Student Academic Handbook.

IRENA MSc Scholarship Programme
During these two years Programmes, IRENA’s MSc scholars will work on a research project and can select between the below listed MSc Programmes. The study is completed with a Master thesis. Research project and Master thesis shall be relevant to renewable energies.


Programmes - IRENA scholarships in 8 MSc Programmes available
Chemical Engineering, Computing and Information Science, Electrical Power Engineering, Engineering Systems and Management, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Microsystems Engineering, Water and Environmental Engineering.

Benefits - Full financial support is provided to IRENA MSc scholars
Tuition fees, textbooks, laptop, medical insurance, housing, travel expenses are covered by the scholarships. In addition a cost of living allowance is granted to IRENA MSc scholars.

No bond or conditions are attached to the scholarship upon graduation.

IRENA MSc Scholars will benefit from IRENA’s Lecture Programme and a unique direct contact to IRENA experts and their first-hand information on current renewable energy developments.

Who can apply
Individuals with outstanding academic record who completed their undergraduate studies (or near completion) in a relevant field

Eligible students have to comply with entry requirements defined by the MASDAR Institute:

  • Relevant undergraduate degree from a college, university or technical college of acceptable standing in the field of science, engineering or information technology
  • Academic record and credentials must indicate the ability to achieve distinction
  • The minimum CGPA required is 3.0 on a scale of 4.0.
  • Competence in spoken and written English. The minimum TOEFL score required is 91 (IBT) on the international TOEFL. The TOEFL can only be waived for native English speakers. The minimum academic IELTS score required is 6.5.
  • The minimum GRE quantitative score required is 700. There is no cut-off score for the verbal and analytical part, but these scores are also important and evaluated. The GRE exam cannot be waived.

The ETS institutional GRE code for MASDAR Institute is 3870. Only the GRE general test is required. The ETS institutional TOEFL code for MASDAR Institute is 5786.

  • Besides the criteria applied through MASDAR Institute, IRENA will consider the following for the allocation of its MSc Scholarships:
    Desired specialisation within the chosen MSc programme
  • Description of knowledge already acquired in the field of renewable energies and relevant previous professional engagements.
  • In case of equal aptitude, priority access will be given to applicants from Developing Countries.

How to apply - Easy online application
Interested students apply for an IRENA MSc Scholarship directly through MASDAR Institute’s website. Applications have to be submitted electronically. All required proofs and certificates have to be sent to MASDAR Institute. A listing on the required documents can be obtained on MASDAR Institute’s website.

Important: Please indicate in the online application by keying in “IRENA” after your passport number in the relevant field, e.g. 12345678 – IRENA. If this indication is not given, the student will apply for a regular scholarship and not be able to benefit from exclusive IRENA services granted to IRENA MSc scholars.

IRENA MSc scholarship now open for application
IRENA’s MSc scholarships are now open for application and will be closed 31 May 2011 for the Academic Year 2011/ 2012. Apply online via MASDAR Institute’s website, and indicate that you are applying for an IRENA Scholarship.
