PhD Scholarships 2009 in Geobiosphere Science at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystems Analysis, Lund University
Lund University announces the following vacancy:
POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP in Geobiosphere Science with placement at the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystems Analysis, Faculty of Science.
The position will be within the framework of a new research centre at Lund University, LUCCI (Lund University Centre for Studies of Carbon Cycle and Climate Interactions) financed by a long term (10 years) Linnaeus grant by the Swedish Research Council.
Research at the Centre spans a broad range of disciplines, e.g., Geology, Physical Geography, Climatology, Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry, Ecology, Plant Physiology, Soil Science and Microbiology. There are c. 85 researchers from four different departments within the Faculties of Science and Engineering. Read more about LUCCI at www.lucci.lu.se.
The mechanisms underlying the evolution of Holocene CO2 and CH4 concentrations and climate remain controversial, including whether or not humans have played a discernible role regionally or globally. In this project we aim to improve existing knowledge about human land use over the last 6000 yrs. It will expand a global dataset that was implemented within the LPJ-GUESS modelling framework in order to better assess the role of past human impact on the carbon cycle. The project will link on-going ecosystem modelling work being carried out in Lund with vegetation reconstructions and will involve model applications using LPJ-GUESS.
Candidates should hold a Master of Science degree in Ecology, Geography, Geology, GIS or an environmental science, be interested in data assimilation and have an interest in past human and environmental history or archaeology. Some experience in programming or modelling using C++ or a similar language is required.
Excellent written and spoken English is a requirement.
See general study plan at www.naturvetenskap.lu.se/o.o.i.s/3056
The position is guaranteed for four years. The starting date is negotiable, but the project should commence as soon as possible. Applications for this position should include a letter stating the reasons for applying and brief statements about ambitions in relation to the project. The application should also include a CV with general personal information and details of previous study/work record.
Regulations concerning appointment as a full doctoral student can be found in HF 5 Chap 1-7§§ and SFS 1998:80. Also consult the admission regulations found at: http://www.science.lu.se/o.o.i.s/4964
An educational stipend is awarded for the first 18 months of full-time study, following which time the student is appointed as a full doctoral student. Regulations concerning educational stipends for doctoral students can be found in SFS 1995:938 and 1998:81. Regulations concerning appointment as a full doctoral student can be found in HF 5 Chap 1-7§§ and SFS 1998:80.
Those who hold an educational stipend or a doctoral student appointment must first be accepted for postgraduate study. To be accepted, a student must be judged to have the competence necessary to complete a course of postgraduate study.
In addition to pursuing postgraduate studies, the doctoral student may also perform other duties – including research, teaching and administration — according to the specific regulations.
The university strives for a more even gender representation within postgraduate education. Since most postgraduate students within the faculty are men, applications from women are encouraged.
