A full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate to investigate the relationship of lifestyle, metabolic and/or genetic factors with incidence and health outcomes of gynaecological cancers. This scholarship is funded by a Cancer Institute NSW fellowship grant and will provide support for 3 years on a full-time basis for a research project leading to a PhD in cancer epidemiology. The candidate will be based with the Cancer Epidemiology and Services Research group, Sydney School of Public Health, supervised by Dr Anne Cust. The specific PhD research program will be developed within the broad area of the epidemiology of gynaecological cancers, and developed also on the candidate’s own background and research interests.

Eligibility:
Applicants should have postgraduate training in epidemiology or biostatistics. Alternatively, we will consider candidates with an Honours 1 degree in a relevant discipline and with a strong interest in quantitative research. Experience in cancer or clinical research would be advantageous but not essential. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens, and must be eligible to successfully enrol in a PhD at the University of Sydney.

Amount awarded:
The scholarship is valued at $22,860 per annum (tax exempt; equivalent to NHMRC standard stipend), indexed annually and may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress. A maintenance allowance of $1500 per year will be available for the purchase of consumables relevant to the Scholarship or attending appropriate courses. Conference travel up to $2000 per year will be available to be used towards presenting at relevant conferences. It is expected that the student will apply for a scholarship from competitive sources (e.g., NHMRC, Cancer Institute NSW) following receipt of which, we will offer a top-up of $6000/year.

Application guide:
Further information can be obtained from Dr Anne Cust, Cancer Epidemiology and Services Research (CESR), Sydney School of Public Health, Sydney Medical School, The University of Sydney NSW 2006 (Phone: +61 2 9114 1944; Fax: +61 2 9114 1946 E-mail: anne.cust@sydney.edu.au).
