Study and Research Scholarships of Today for the Megacities of Tomorrow, DAAD, Germany

Under its research focus on “Future Megacities - Energy- and climate-efficient structures in urban growth centres” the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) funds international collaborative projects in which German scientists and researchers an practitioners work together with partners in Vietnam, India, China, Iran, Peru, South Africa, Ethiopia and Morocco on drawing up and implementing solution-orientated, innovative strategies for selected cities.

The special programme on “Study and Research Scholarships of Today for the Megacities of Tomorrow” is also financed from the budget of the BMBF and offers highly-qualified postdocs, senior scientists and senior experts from the above-mentioned countries the opportunity to study or do research in project-relevant subject areas.

The studies and research should be carried out at German universities that are contributing to the collaborative projects. The collaborative projects, the project-relevant subject areas, the contributing German universities, and the respective contact partners can be found in the Annex. By integrating the scholarship holders into the work of the collaborative projects, the programme aims to create sustain-able networking between the scholarship holders themselves and the German project partners.


Who can apply?
Applications are open to highly-qualified postdocs, senior scientists and senior experts from the above-mentioned countries.

Postdoctoral Research in Germany (Type A)
The scholarships can be awarded for between 6 months at least and up to 24 months at most. At the time of application, no more than 5 years should have passed since gaining the doctorate (Promotion/PhD). Proof of very good English language skills must be presented. The monthly scholarship installment amounts to 1,840 Euros. For scholarships lasting longer than 10 months, the costs for a two-month German course may also be funded.

Research Visits of Senior Scientists in Germany (Type B)
The scholarships are offered to scientists and researchers who hold leading positions in science and research at academic institutions in their home country. The scholarship can be awarded for between 14 days and up to 3 months. The monthly scholarship amounts to 2,240 Euros.

Please note: The research stay has to end by 31 August 2012 at the latest!

Study Visits of Senior Experts in Germany (Type C)
The scholarships are open to experts, who hold leading positions in governmental or non-governmental organization, who are dealing with Megacity-topics and who simultaneously are cooperating with the leaders of the local Megacity-project partners. It is a precondition that applicants hold at least a Bachelor Degree. The scholarship can be awarded for between 14 days and up to 3 months. The monthly scholarship amounts to 2,240 Euros.

Selection process
In coordination with the DAAD the scholarship holders are chosen by an independent Selection Committee made up of German scientists and researchers.

The key selection criteria are the quality of the study or research project, and the applicant’s academic and personal qualifications.

Application process
The application papers must be submitted in triple (non tacked!), inclusive of all documents. Applicants are requested to complete the form “Application for Re-search Grants and Study Scholarships” (http://www.daad.de/deutschland/download/03118.en.html). The coversheet must specify the respective Type of Scholarship. Please include the following documents and papers together with the Application Form:

Type A: Curriculum vitae (2 pages max.) Letters of recommendation from 2 scientists or researchers of the applicant’s own choice Summary of the PhD thesis (2 pages max.) Description of the research project (3 pages max.) incl. planned field re-search abroad (where possible, agreed with the German supervisor)

Applicants from Vietnam and China are requested to send their papers and documents to the DAAD via its Regional Offices in Hanoi and Beijing, respectively.

Applicants from South Africa are requested to send their papers and documents to the DAAD via its Information Centres in Johannesburg (DAAD Information Centre South Africa, c/o University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, P.O. Box 269, Wits 2050, Tel 011 - 717 9334, Fax 011 - 717 9335, Email DAAD@wits.ac.za).

Applicants from Ethiopia, Peru, Iran and Morocco are requested to send their papers and documents to the DAAD via the German Embassies in Addis Ababa, Lima, Tehran and Rabat.

Applications will be accepted until 30 September 2010 in New Delhi, Hanoi, Beijing, South Africa via Johannesburg, Tehran, Addis Ababa, Lima and Rabat .
